A home founded on care, compassion and comfort for the poor, the sick and the homeless is Karunya Nilayam. A charitable organisation sponsored by the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, it was the support and goodwill of several individuals and organisations that helped the centre, officially founded in 1993, work its way up from humble beginnings to the sixstoreyed building that it today occupies. A journey that helped touch several lives and bring back many smiles.
WINDOW TO HOPE : Serving the poor and the sick
It was the simple objective of providing food and medical aid to at least a few of the lakhs of patients at the Kottayam Medical College Hospital and the Cancer Care Centre, that led to the setting up of Karunya Nilayam in 1993. Since then, the centre, set up near the Medical College Hospital has been organising various activities to help the poor and the sick, under the guidance of a board of trustees presided over by H. H. Baselius Paulose II. His Grace Geevarghese Mar Ivanios, Metropolitan of Kottayam is functioning as the Managing Trustee.
PILLAR OF STRENGTH : Supporting the less fortunate
One of the initiatives launched by Karunya Nilayam is Light of Life, a unique project that envisages setting up a fund and treatment centre in Kottayam for cancer patients. The project primarily aims at cancer patients among school children, belonging to the underprivileged sections of society. The first phase was carried out in remote areas of Idukki and Wayanad, where higher incidence of cancer among children has been reported.
DOOR TO A BETTER TOMORROW : Reaching out for a better living
Apart from its constant efforts to give the less privileged every opportunity to lead a normal life, what powers the growth of Karunya Nilayam is the support of millions of wellwishers. Who lend a hand to the centre in every possible waybe it providing clothes or donating blood.
